The bill, named the Dietary Supplement and Nonprescription Drug Consumer Act, is expected to go to the Senate floor for a vote in mid-July.
Citizens for Health said that the proposed bill not only shows a serious commitment to consumer safety and protection but also includes appropriate safeguards so that unjustified burdens are not placed on responsible over-the-counter (OTC) healthcare and supplements firms.
The group believes that, if passed, the bill will emphasize how well regulated the dietary supplement industry actually is and how committed supplement companies already are to safety and to making the existing regulations work more effectively.
The increased regulation could also ease consumer concerns about alternative products, which are not as rigorously tested as pharmaceuticals and can vary significantly in quality and safety.
