Canada, UK join forces against antibiotic resistance

The collaboration is believed to make use of the academic and clinical research strengths of both Canada and the UK to drive the research on innovative alternatives to existing antibiotics.

The research team led by professor Gary Dmitrienko of the University Waterloo and professor Tim Walsh of the University of Cardiff will focus on developing a new treatment for infections caused by bacteria resistant to beta-lactam antibiotics.

The other team led by professor Anthony Clarke of the University of Guelph and professor Chris Dowson of the University of Warwick will focus on increasing understanding of bacterial cell wall growth and identifying new targets for the development of new antibiotics.

Canadian Minister of State for Science and Technology The Honourable Gary Goodyear said Canada is pleased to support this important collaborative effort to develop new strategies and tools to protect Canadians from antibiotic resistant infections.
