Biolase wins two new US patents for dental technologies

The first patent covers laser tips that can be configured to direct energy in multiple directions including to the sides, away from the handpiece.

This patent relates not only to a diverse set of dental applications, but also to certain non-dental applications that the company may choose to market through strategic partners. The patent contains 33 claims, of which six are independent.

The second patent covers the situating of a fiber tip within an electromagnetic cutting instrument as well as directing water particles over the delivery end of that fiber tip.

This patent is said to be central to the company’s current and future tip technologies, including the disposable tips that are central to the company’s strategy of expanding recurring revenues while delivering clinically superior devices to its customers and their patients. The patent contains 46 claims, of which 10 are independent.

Jake St Philip, CEO of Biolase, said: “These patents not only bolster our overall patent portfolio, but also arm us with powerful intellectual property protection as we grow our consumables business and generate new products at home and overseas.”
