Medicine Shoppe to stock GelStat migraine drug

Medicine Shoppe International, a Cardinal Health Company, is the largest franchisor of independent community pharmacies in the US with nearly 1,000 Medicine Shoppe pharmacies domestically and nearly 300 pharmacies in seven other countries.

“Medicine Shoppe Pharmacies are well-known for offering safe and effective products that pharmacists can recommend with confidence,” said Art Pirrone, vice president of sales for GelStat. “As such, GelStat Migraine is an ideal compliment to their prescription drug business.”

In 2003, Medicine Shoppe International acquired Medicap Pharmacies Incorporated, which franchises independent community pharmacies in the US under the trade name Medicap Pharmacy. There are over 175 Medicap pharmacies in 34 states.

A study published in Pharmacy Times in 2001 reported that a US pharmacist is asked to recommend an over-the-counter (OTC) headache product over 50,000 times each day, and that pharmacists suggest an OTC remedy specifically for migraine nearly 16,000 times each day.

“Our experience is that pharmacists are very receptive to GelStat Migraine as a uniquely advantageous new treatment option. Creating informed awareness among these trusted and influential professionals is an important part of our 2005 marketing plan,” said Glenn Smith, marketing manager for GelStat.
