The Moratuwa facility will produce 2.5 billion Panadol brand of paracetamol tablets, annually, according to the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, reports news360.lk.
Industry and Commerce minister Rishard Bathiudeen said the new source of supply will boost the pharma manufacturing sector and will also help stabilize domestic prices.
GSK executive T.S. Dayananda said the company is also planning to invest a further LKR1.4bn ($11.2m) to expand operations in Sri Lanka.
The production of Panadol tablets at the plant is expected to begin later this month.
GSK is also planning to set up a plant in Kurunagela city, to boost pharma industry in Sri Lanka.
