Livingston: Recently Vaisala released the latest build of its viewLinc Environmental Monitoring System. What’s different about this version?
Aldous: The previous version of the viewLinc system has long been used by pharmaceuticals, but it’s also ideal for museums, galleries, and in IT server rooms. The new viewLinc system is based on the newly developed wireless capabilities. This helps our data logging devices communicate reliably in obstructed environments.
Livingston: What are the wireless capabilities, and how did Vaisala obtain them?
Aldous: We licensed a brand new long-range wireless specification called LoRa® to create our own wireless system called VaiNet. This specification allows for superior signal strength between network access points and data loggers, with wired-equivalent communication over 100 meters indoors. It’s not affected by walls, equipment, Wi-Fi networks, or other usual signal impediments.
Livingston: Vaisala’s monitoring system has been around since the 90s. Were there any other changes to the system for this version?
Aldous: Yes. We worked with several long-time customers, collecting a wish-list of system functions that could be either simplified or automated. We eliminated or improved aspects of system deployment that were time-consuming or complex, and updated the software interface with embedded help to guide users through common tasks. In the end, we created a monitoring system that can be installed in minutes, maintains compliance for years, and eliminates almost every issue related to wireless data logging.
