Sigma-Aldrich plans to expand operations in Scotland

The new Irvine facility is the second powder manufacturing facility, which is expected to support and strengthen risk management program, providing an internal back-up supplier for the customers.

The project will be supported by a £1.5m Regional Selective Assistance grant from Scottish Enterprise, the country’s economic development organization.

Sigma-Aldrich Fine Chemicals (SAFC) president Gilles Cottier said the liquid facility investment at Irvine was a part of SAFC’s strategy to support the key European biopharmaceutical accounts.

"We are delighted to expand on that initial investment and look forward to continued success in Scotland and throughout Europe," Cottier added.

The First Minister and Scottish Enterprise Chief Executive Lena Wilson will meet the company’s representatives to discuss the plans and look at other options to grow its Scottish operations.

Scotland First Minister Alex Salmond said, "This expansion to create a new manufacturing facility by SAFC puts Scotland firmly at the center of this US company’s European operations and is a clear signal to world-leading companies that we are open for business.
