The Personal Diabetes Manager (PDM) with integrated DexCom technology is expected to broaden Insulet’s portfolio of diabetes management products. The development agreement between Insulet and DexCom also contemplates further work by Insulet and DexCom towards development of a closed-loop system. The agreement is non-exclusive and does not impact any of Insulet’s existing third party development agreements.
The PDM with DexCom technology will combine the functionality of both systems’s handheld receivers into one single handheld wireless device, eliminating the need for a separate receiver. The PDM will be used to program the wearable OmniPod with insulin delivery instructions and will also receive and display continuous glucose readings directly from DexCom’s wearable sensor transmitter. The integrated system will provide patients with continuous information about glucose levels and allow patients to continuously track trends, enabling them to accurately anticipate excursions outside of normal glucose levels and to make appropriate treatment adjustments. Development, clinical and regulatory efforts are expected to continue throughout 2008, with an anticipated product launch in mid-2009.
Duane DeSisto, president and CEO of Insulet, said: “Integrating DexCom’s technology into the OmniPod PDM will combine the proven benefits of insulin pump therapy and continuous glucose monitoring in a single safe, discreet and easy-to-use system.”
