news.RF Surgical Systems, a privately held medical device company, has received approval from the FDA to market its Blair-Port Wand as a reusable scanning device with a 24-hour activation lifecycle in the OR.

The Blair-Port Wand is a critical component of the company’s patented and FDA-approved surgical sponge detection system. Prior to beginning closing procedures, a surgical patient is scanned with the wand. If any RFDetect tagged surgical sponges, gauze or towels remain in the patient, a signal will alert the surgical team and allow them to remove the retained sponge.
Gary Blackbourn, vice president of sales and marketing at RF Surgical Systems, said: “Given that RFDetect tagged sponges are less expensive than those used by competitive counting systems and that our RF Surgical Detection consoles are provided free of charge, the RF Surgical Detection system offers even more clear-cut advantages to hospitals in terms of cost, accuracy and ease-of-use.”
