GSK to reduce US sales jobs by 1,000

The British drug maker GlaxoSmithKline has announced that it will reduce its US sales force by 1,000, a reduction of around 12%, as part of restructuring its US sales operations.

The company has also reduced the number of US headquarters from two to one and moved its headquarters to Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. The initiative was undertaken in a bid to scale down costs and eliminate confusion, the company said.

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) presently has 22,500 employees in the US, about 8,500 of which are sales representatives. The company intends to axe 1,000 sales jobs and expects to end up with 7,500 US sales representatives by the end of 2008. However, the company plans to beef up its position in the vaccines and specialty pharmaceuticals.

According to the company, the nationwide lay-offs and the structural changes will take place by the end of 2008.
