news.The UK's National Institute for Health Research has invested GBP45 million in 12 new biomedical research units which will focus on translational research, reported PJB news.

The funding is expected to help smaller centres conduct high-quality research and achieve critical mass in priority areas, including respiratory and gastrointestinal diseases.
The biomedical research units were selected by an international expert panel and will receive GBP3.75 million each over the next three years. They will be run locally by NHS Trusts and universities.The research units were established in 2006 in London, Oxford, Cambridge, Liverpool and Manchester for furthering other NHS or university partnerships in order to enhance excellence and challenge the existing National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Biomedical Research Centres.
