Blue Cross implements Zix e-messaging services

Health insurer Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota has licensed e-messaging protection services from e-communications firm Zix as part of a three year contract.

Blue Cross is using the ZixVPM (Virtual Private Messenger) to enforce its email security policies in order to ensure secure handling of confidential information to its users, including a pre-configured lexicon that automatically detects and encrypts protected health information.

The insurer will also deploy the ZixPort email encryption and content filtering services to provide custom branding and encrypted messaging functionality to its web site.

The agreement is expected to help Blue Cross meet the privacy and security regulations of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA).
