Affymetrix launches NG Class detergents for better protein analysis

California-based Affymetrix has launched Anatrace brand of Neopentyl Glycol (NG) Class Detergents which discernibly advances integral membrane proteins (IMPs) studies.

The NG Class represents a new detergent family based on the maltose-neopentyl amphiphile design, and is more capable than current leading detergents, such as n-dodecyl-ß-D-maltoside (DDM) in speeding up crystallization of IMPs for structural and functional studies.

A December 2010 Nature Methods study compared the performance of NG Class Detergents to existing popular amphiphiles to find that the former exhibited a ‘superior’ performance, and concluded that such detergents show favorable behavior relative to conventional detergents leading to enhanced structural stability and successful crystallization.

Affymetrix chief commercial officer Andy Last said the new NG Class Detergents give biologists enhanced tools to solve the structure of membrane proteins using advanced techniques, such as nuclear magnetic resonance and X-ray diffraction.

As membrane proteins have diverse sequences, shapes, and properties, Affymetrix is launching three Anatrace brand NG Class Detergents as substitutes for the three most popular glucoside detergents, lauryl and decyl maltosides and octyl glucoside for easier understanding of diversely shaped and sequenced membrane proteins.
