CSRMI Director Clive Svendsen and his team led by Dhruv Sareen were given this grant to invent a new pharmaceutical discovery process that employs pluripotent stem cells in order to find a pharmaceutical treatment for Spinal Muscular Atrophy.
Additionally, another team from the Cedars-Sinai Department of Surgery will share a $1.5m grant with a medical technology company to develop a new imaging system.
Svendsen said that these grants would allow continuous advancements in stem cell science and help reach the goal of a new era in treatment, especially for diseases that currently have no cure or standard treatment.
