Alliance Boots defends Pfizer deal in Europe – report

Alliance Boots has launched a European legal action against the European Association of Pharmaceutical Full-Line Wholesalers in defense of its distribution deal with Pfizer, according to a report in The Times.

UniChem, the drug wholesaling arm of the merged Alliance Boots group, recently filed an application in a Brussels commercial court against the association, which is attempting to block the deal. The agreement made between the two would see Alliance Boots as the sole distributor for all Pfizer medicines in the UK.

The European wholesaler claims that it raises competition concerns and poses a threat to patients by increasing the risk of delays in the delivery of vital medicines. Pfizer and UniChem are contesting the claims and argue that the deal will protect patients by preventing counterfeit drugs entering the supply chain, says the Times.

The report states that the wholesalers group has written to the UK government to express its opposition but UniChem, which is a member of the organization, claims it has acted unconstitutionally in doing so.
