DSM acquires Microbia from Ironwood Pharma

Royal DSM, a Netherlands-based global life sciences and materials sciences company, has acquired industrial biotechnology research and development specialist Microbia from Ironwood Pharmaceuticals.

Microbia claimed that it has developed a technology platform that enables it to produce high-quality, natural carotenoids (including ß-carotene and canthaxanthin), nutritional products and other specialty materials and chemicals from renewable resources.

The acquisition will allow DSM to incorporate Microbia’s proprietary platform and research and development capabilities to support its ongoing development of the natural carotenoids market.

DSM Nutritional Products president and CEO Leendert Staal said that the acquisition of Microbia represents a significant step for DSM to accelerate innovation activities in natural products and fermentation processes.

Microbia chief science officer Kevin Madden said that the firm will help accelerate DSM’s ongoing efforts to develop, produce and commercialize the next generation of nutritional ingredients and other materials that will help the food, feed, chemicals and other industries produce more innovative and sustainable products, in a far more cost effective and responsible manner.
