FDA seeks $4.5bn budget to protect and promote public health

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is seeking a budget of $4.5bn to protect and promote the public health as part of the US fiscal year (FY) 2013 budget.

The FDA request reflects a 17% increase over the FDA enacted budget for FY 2012.

The FY 2013 request covers the period from 1 October 2012 through 30 September 2013.

The FDA budget recommends new user fees to support the review of generic drugs and biosimilars.

The FDA FY 2013 budget includes Protecting Patients, Transforming Food Safety, Medical Countermeasures, Data Consolidation and IT Savings and the Food and Drug Inspections in China.

Food and Drugs Commissioner Margaret Hamburg said the budget priorities will benefit patients and consumers and strengthen their economy.
