GSK executives in China plead guilty to bribery and tax violations

China’s Ministry of Public Security has announced that some executives of British drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) in the country have pleaded guilty to bribery and tax law related violations.

During a preliminary interrogation, the suspected executives from GSK along with unspecified travel agencies admitted using fake receipts in tax crimes.

The ministry has charged that GSK’s staff was involved in offering bribes to Chinese government officials, medical associations, hospitals and doctors in order to increase sales and prices in the country.

Expressing its willingness to cooperate with the authorities in the inquiry, GSK stated, "But this is the first official communication GSK has received from the PSB in relation to the specific nature of its investigation."

"We continuously monitor our businesses to ensure they meet our strict compliance procedures – we have done this in China and found no evidence of bribery or corruption of doctors or government officials," the company added.

As per China’s legal system, charges on the GSK executives will be formally imposed following the conclusion of preliminary investigations.
