Ingredion recalls dietary ingredient

US based ingredient supplier, Ingredion has recalled dietary supplements ingredient that is supposed to be contaminated with salmonella.

The withdrawal for the product, Purimune was issued after the company noticed an ingredient called galactooligosacharides, which tested positive for salmonella, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The company has called off 40,000 pounds of the ingredient, an indigestible milk fibre, which is expected to help the immune system and digestion.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said it is probing the ingredient produced in Ingredion’s South Korean plant to find out if it has been mixed in other dietary supplements sold to consumers and if so further recalls may be issued.

The FDA, so far has not received any reports of illness associated with the called off product.

Salmonella is an organism that may cause infections in young children, elderly people and others with weak immune systems.
