Low Aldehyde PEG To Enhance Shelf Life Of Formulators

Dow has announced the launch of low aldehyde grades of Carbowax Sentry PEG. The product is a niche product used to enhance shelf life of formulators. It was launched by Dow with the help of AAPS 2009.

Harold Nicholl, communications leader at Dow, said to in-PharmaTechnologist, said: “The 300, 400 and 600 low aldehyde grades of Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) require significant expertise to manufacture. This limits the companies that have the capabilities to pursue the niche opportunity.”

The product will be used for gelatin encapsulation/formulations where aldehyde impurities decrease stability. The company also claims that in high dose it will reduce ethylene glycol levels to help comply with US Pharmacopoeia.
