Merck opens new packaging facility in Indonesia

America-based pharmaceutical company Merck Sharp and Dohme (MSD) has launched a new $21m packaging factory in Pandaan, Pasuruan, East Java in Indonesia.

The 4,900m² factory will manufacture medicinal packages for infections, cardiovascular issues, hypertension, respiratory issues, oncology and diabetics.

MSD Asia Pacific president Patrick Bergstedt was quoted by The Jakarta Post as saying that the company saw a big opportunity in the Asian region’s economic growth, especially in Indonesia.

"We realize that the crisis in Europe does not significantly affect the Asian market, in which purchasing power and consumption of medicine keeps increasing," Bergstedt added.

Twenty five percent of the products produced at Pandaan facility will be used to meet the domestic market needs while the rest will be exported.
