The North West Exemplar Programme has found the NHS to be among the best in Europe for conducting medical trials. Through a series of 20 studies, the programme aimed to show that the NHS could be a first class environment for commercial pharmaceutical research.

The studies achieved a median set-up time of 54 days compared with an average of 140 days for all commercial studies in the NHS Research’s database of active trials.
The programme was run alongside NHS chief executives, NHS North West and industry leaders, and the results were found to be similar to the median set-up times of 56 days in France, Germany or Sweden.
The institute now aims to roll out the proven practices across England with the report recommending that NHS chief executives ‘engage on the R&D agenda’ and build capacity to make the UK more attractive for the research and development community.
