Seidenader Maschinenbau (Seidenader), a supplier of automatic inspection machines for the pharmaceutical industry, has developed a method to verify pierced needle shields inline and at full production speeds up to 600 syringes/min.

The company said that the needles of pre-filled syringes, penetrating the needle shield, put sterility of needle and product at risk, as well as endanger medical staff. A pierced needle shield cannot reliably be verified by vision systems and even less by operators.
In this process, applying high voltage to the lower section of the syringe and using the conductivity of the protruding needle, allows detecting these defects with high reliability. Tests have shown that even defects hidden by rigid plastic shields (RNS) can be detected.
The inspection station can be integrated in a star wheel on Seidenaders standard VI-S inspection machine. The defects detected can be separated in a dedicated reject channel.
