Sri Lanka to take up drug manufacturing program

The Sri Lankan health ministry has signed a deal with Japan International Corporation Agency to introduce a drug manufacturing program.

Under the terms of the agreement, the Japanese agency will support State Pharmaceutical Corporation of Sri Lanka in the production of drugs locally, news.lk reported.

Currently, 50 varieties of drugs are manufactured by the State Pharmaceutical Corporation and around 40 varieties by other private companies.

The country is believed to import drugs from other nations owing to insufficient local production.

news.lk quoted Sri Lankan Minister of Health Maithripala Sirisena saying that the import of drugs involves a huge expenditure by the Health sector of their country.
