Swanson Health Reformulates FemFlora With New Probiotic Bacteria

Swanson Health Products (Swanson), a North Dakota-based provider of nutrition and supplement products, has reformulated Swanson Ultra line of FemFlora with a new complex of probiotic bacteria, which retails for $6.99.

Swanson said that the reformulation of FemFlora is to address a woman’s complex probiotic needs. The new Swanson Ultra FemFlora contains multiple lactobacilli species to support the flora of the mouth, gastrointestinal tract (GI) and vagina.

According to Swanson, probiotics work by assisting in establishing non-harmful bacteria which compete with other bacteria that may exist in the GI tract. Further the company said that the lactic bacteria are sensitive to acidity and their passage through the stomach into the intestine is easier when gastric juices have been neutralized by food.

The lactobacillus strains have been studied for their role in supporting and maintaining vaginal health. These strains may protect the urogenital tract by excreting biosurfactants that help keep the tissues clean and healthy. Another strain in this new formula, L plantarum, appears to be a predominant strain in both oral and intestinal mucosa.
