UK MHRA recalled 16 drugs made at Wockhardt’s Waluj site in India

The UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has issued a precautionary recall of Wockhardt's 16 different drugs made at its Waluj site in India, following identification of manufacturing deficiencies.

The recalled prescription only medicines include Erythromycin, Metformin, Atenolol, Pramipexole, Risperidone and Clopidogrel among others.

MHRA Inspection, Enforcement and Standards director Gerald Heddell said that the move was not a patient level recall and the action was taken because the medicines have not been manufactured as per right regulatory standards.

"People can be reassured that there is no evidence that medicines made by Wockhardt are defective so it’s important people continue to take their medicines as prescribed," Heddell added.

During a routine inspection in March 2013, MHRA identified a possibility of low risk of cross-contamination due to poor cleaning practices and defects in building fabric and the ventilation systems at the site.

Furthermore, the regulator found proofs of forged documents associated with staff training records that had been rewritten.

Meanwhile, the Department of Health is working closely with the companies concerned so that patients are able to get their medicines whenever they require.
