US imposes ban on bath salts chemicals

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in US, has temporarily banned chemicals used in a new type of street drug known as bath salts.

The chemicals present in bath salts including mephedrone, methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV) and methylone have been banned for around one year for public safety, Reuters reported.

A permanent ban on the chemicals will be decided after conducting further studies.

The chemicals are present on DEA’s most restrictive list which include substances with high potential for abuse and that cannot be used in any treatment.

The chemicals are said to have similar effects of drugs like cocaine and has caused impaired perception, reduced motor control, disorientation, extreme paranoia and violent episodes in the users.
