  • GSK’s Helium Rises to the Top

Familiarity breeds contempt, it's said, but not in the case of GlaxoSmithKline's most recent tool for SAR analysis: Helium, which has the ubiquitous Microsoft Excel at its core, and received Bio-IT World's Best Practices Award in the Knowledge Management category this year.

  • University of Melbourne Student Wins Malvern Poster Prize at UK Colloids

The winner of the Malvern Instruments £250 prize for the best student poster presented at the recent UK Colloids 2011 conference was Thakshila Balasuriya from The University of Melbourne, for her work describing ‘Dynamic Forces between Bubbles with Switchable Peptide Surfactants’. Thakshila is a third year PhD student in the Dynamic Interfacial Forces Group and her thesis work is focused on nanoscale interactions forces in biomolecular systems in soft matter.

  • New Software for Malvern’s Morphologi G3 Puts Particles in a Different Light!

Malvern Instruments has released a new version of software for the company’s Morphologi G3 particle characterization system. This fully automated image analysis-based system delivers particle size and shape information for wet and dry samples, and for the analysis of foreign particulate matter collected on filters. Among the new applications in the version 7.40 software are facilities for user-defined light settings and automated dark-field measurements, further extending the range of applications for which the Morphologi G3 can be used. A new reanalyze function enables the application of filters, classes and the rebinning of data to multiple records, for improved productivity and workflow.

  • DASGIP iApp Now Includes Webcam Support

The DASGIP iApp for remote control of DASGIP Parallel Bioreactor Systems now additionally includes webcam support. The upgraded DASGIP iApp version has been approved by Apple and is available for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch via the App store.

  • Malvern’s Viscotek TDAmax “Warms the Heart” of an Academic Polymer Scientist

"Good value and excellent performance is a combination that will warm the heart of any academic polymer scientist,” said Professor Kenneth J Wynne of the Department of Chemical and Life Science Engineering at Virginia Commonwealth University, when asked about his 11-year use of Viscotek gel permeation chromatography (GPC) systems from Malvern Instruments.

  • Malvern Instruments and Paraytec Enter Into Development and Technology Licensing Agreement

Malvern Instruments Ltd (Malvern, UK) and Paraytec Ltd (York, UK) have entered into a development and licensing agreement that will see Paraytec’s ActiPix® technology being added to Malvern’s materials characterization portfolio. The agreement will give Malvern exclusive rights to further develop, market and sell ActiPix® UV area imaging technology in specific fields of use related to the characterization of complex fluids for applications in biopharmaceuticals, foods and personal care industrial sectors.

  • Tracking Cancer Cells Using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR)

At the Institute of Biophysics and physical Biochemistry of Professor Dr. Dr. Hans Robert Kalbitzer at the University of Regensburg, a team of researchers is using NMR spectroscopy to study the metabolism of tumor cells and to find biomarkers, i.e., measurable products e.g., as indicators for disease. The goal is to identify tumor-initiating cells, to predict their development and to facilitate targeted treatments. A BINDER KB 240 climate chamber with gas supply plays an important role in the experiment setup.
