Philips set to buy healthcare IT company Stentor for $280m

Dutch firm Royal Philips Electronics is to acquire Stentor, a provider of digital medical imaging, for $280m in cash.

Brisbane, California-based Stentor develops picture archiving and communication systems (PACS) used for storing, managing and distributing digital radiology images throughout hospitals and healthcare facilities.

As part of the purchase agreement, the company will be incorporated into the healthcare IT business of Philips’ Medical Systems division and its offices will form the global headquarters of Philips’ overall PACS operations.

Philips said the addition of Stentor’s products to its own patient monitoring and medical diagnostic imaging equipment will strengthen its presence in the healthcare IT market. The merger will also enable the firm to equip electronic health records (EHRs) with diagnostic medical images that it says can be viewed throughout the hospital and via the internet.

Stentor hopes the acquisition will enable it to enter the European and Asian markets and extend its PACS technology outside the radiology department into other areas of the hospital where conditions like cancer and heart disease are treated.
