IBM, WellPoint, Memorial Sloan-Kettering unveil new cognitive computing technologies

IBM, WellPoint and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center have unveiled new next-generation cognitive computing advancements to transform quality care for patients.

The new products include the Interactive Care Insights for Oncology, powered by Watson, in collaboration with IBM, Memorial Sloan-Kettering and WellPoint, the WellPoint Interactive Care Guide and Interactive Care Reviewer, powered by Watson, designed for utilization management in collaboration with WellPoint and IBM.

The Watson-based systems are designed to assist doctors, researchers, medical centers, and insurance carriers.

Watson Solutions IBM general manager Manoj Saxena said, "These breakthrough capabilities bring forward the first in a series of Watson-based technologies, which exemplifies the value of applying big data and analytics and cognitive computing to tackle the industries most pressing challenges."

New Interactive Care Insights for Oncology provides insights helpful in identifying individualized treatment options to patients based on their medical information, provides guidelines and published research.

New WellPoint Interactive Care Guide and Interactive Care Reviewer are developed to optimize review processes between physician and health plan, speed up accepted testing and treatment as well as analyze treatment requests.

WellPoint specialty businesses and information technology executive vice president Lori Beer said, "We believe that WellPoint’s data, knowledge and extensive provider network, combined with the IBM Watson technology and Memorial Sloan-Kettering’s oncological expertise can drive this transformation."

The Watson technology uses advances in natural language processing and analytics to process information comparable to the way people think with speed and accuracy.
