Chattem buys OTC antacid Rolaids from McNEIL-PPC

Chattem, a US consumer healthcare division of Sanofi, has purchased an over-the-counter (OTC) antacid from McNEIL-PPC,a division of Johnson & Johnson.

The antacid Rolaids is intended to help relieve heartburn and acid indigestion.

Chattem chief executive officer Zan Guerry said, "The addition of Rolaids represents a rare opportunity to obtain an iconic brand that we believe will respond positively to our proven approach of growing brands through innovation and advertising."

Rolaids products were withdrawn from the market in 2010 in response to concerns that some packages of the antacid contains foreign particles including metal and wood.

As part of the purchase from McNEIL-PPC’s consumer healthcare division, Chattem will re-launch Rolaids, which is expected to be available at retailers within a year.
