Indian state plans to construct drug manufacturing plants

The Indian state of Kerala is planning to construct manufacturing plants in the public sector to manufacture drugs, which can be affordable and accessible.

Kerala State Health Department official was quoted by Pharmabiz as saying that detailed modalities were being worked out and feasibility studies were being done to set drug plants.

”The working and profitability of the central public sector manufacturing units were also being examined to work out a model for the State," the official added.

Kerala is also considering a public-private partnership mode and implementation of Clinical Establishment Act, which is being implemented by many other Indian states.

Kerala accounts for more than 10 % of national medicine consumption and has a few dozens of drug manufacturing units out of 1000 licensed manufacturing units in the country.
