Shasun pharma to build intermediates facility

Shasun Pharmaceuticals is planning to invest INR500m ($8.9m) to build intermediates facility in Naidupeta, Nellore, AP, India.

The company said the intermediates will initially be used as active pharmaceutical ingredients in some of its drugs derived from petroleum products, reports Business Standard.

The intermediates facility, which is expected to start operations in January 2013, will have an annual capacity of 12,000 tonne per year.

Shasun Pharmaceuticals managing director Abhaya Kumar said manufacturing intermediates on our own will ensure security of supplies for key raw material than depending on some suppliers in China or other countries.

"Wherever we have a strategic position on a particular API, we will reduce dependency on imports," Kumar added.

The company is also planning to open multipurpose and multi-product green-field facility in Visakhapatnam by March-April 2013, as well as looking at a third phase of capacity expansion with a facility for formulations.
