AstraZeneca plans to change drug distribution

UK firm AstraZeneca is to follow a recent trend in business restructuring by implementing a single distribution channel for its products, The Times has reported.

The modification to the business, which could transform the way drugs are delivered in the UK, will mean that only one or two logistics companies will distribute its drugs, The Times said. However, AstraZeneca has commented that it is too early for it to decide on a definitive plan and is still considering a number of options.

“We have undertaken a strategic review of our supply chain and have decided that there are opportunities to improve existing arrangements,” a spokeswoman for AstraZeneca said.

Similar moves are expected from three other pharmaceutical companies including Sanofi-Aventis, Eli Lilly and Novartis, The Times has suggested.

A recent decision by Pfizer to restrict the number of distributors it uses has triggered protests from independent pharmacists and rival wholesalers. The Pfizer deal is due to be implemented next spring but the protesters intend to block the deal in Parliament.
