Wyeth found not guilty in hormone therapy lawsuit

A US district court has found in favor of Wyeth Pharmaceuticals in a lawsuit that claimed the hormone replacement drug Prempro could cause cancer in patients.

Linda Reeves was the plaintiff who was diagnosed with breast cancer after the use of the hormone therapy Prempro. This was the first case of a series of lawsuits against Wyeth Pharmaceuticals.

The plaintiff had claimed throughout the trial that Wyeth overlooked years of research that pointed towards a link between Prempro and cancer and failed to inform patients of the need to screen against cancer.

The jury said that Wyeth was not guilty of misleading patients and had adequately warned patients against the risks of cancer.

“We believe the jury's decision was consistent with the evidence presented and the body of scientific knowledge around hormone therapy,” says Lyn Pruitt, an attorney representing Wyeth in the case.

Prempro is approved as safe and effective. Prempro, is a combination of estrogen and progestin. The drug is used to treat women going through menopause to ease symptoms such as hot flushes.
