Enzymotec wins new patent for Omega-sterol ingredient

Enzymotec has won Australian patent for its Omega-sterols ingredient, a hybrid of phytosterols and omega-3s.

Omega-sterol was clinically proven to be effective for blood lipid control and for supporting healthy levels of both blood triglycerides and LDL-cholesterol (bad cholesterol) in humans, the company said.

According to Naturalproductsinsider, Omega sterols were also clinically proven to be better than standard sterol-esters since they do not hinder the absorption of certain vitamins, such as Vitamin E.

The patent covers the use of this ingredient as a functional food for diabetics and is one of five patents covering properties, composition and methods of use for this ingredient.

Enzymotec omega-3 category manager Eyal Afergan said that the product and its patent applications are an essential part of their strategy.
