The Indian government has drafted a National Pharmaceutical Policy that focuses on the affordability of essential medicines and outlines measures to develop the domestic pharmaceutical industry, reported PharmaTimes.

According to Ram Vilas Paswan, the Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers, the Indian government intends to regulate drug prices to ensure that drugs are accessible and affordable. The minister also said that with the launch of the new health insurance scheme, the affordability of medicines has gained critical importance.

The insurance scheme launched on April 1, 2008, will be 75% financed by India’s central government and 25% by its state governments.
