FDA approves generic allergy drug

The FDA has granted final approval for Caraco Pharmaceutical, Mylan Pharmaceuticals and Perrigo Company's abbreviated new drug applications for cetirizine hydrochloride tablets, over the counter, 5mg and 10mg.

Cetirizine hydrochloride is antihistamine drug, which is used to treat allergies, hives, and other allergic inflammatory conditions. These new products are bioequivalent to Zyrtec Allergy tablets and Zyrtec Hives Relief tablets, registered trademarks of Pfizer.

Perrigo said that the product will be marketed under store brand labels and is comparable to McNeil Consumer Healthcare’s cetirizine hydrochloride tablets, which will be marketed as Zyrtec tablets.
