The combination of Healthways’s behavioral support program and GSK Consumer Healthcare’s over-the-counter product alli (orlistat 60mg) for weight control will help thousands of people improve their overall health, according to both companies. This first-of-its-kind union of innovative, over-the-counter pharma-therapy and health support services offers unprecedented ways to help reduce obesity.
The behavioral support program for weight control is expected to include lifestyle coaching, including access to trained weight management coaches via phone or online, and access to a virtual community which will allow members to interact with others in the program to create a supportive environment. This program is expected to be available in early 2008.
Ben Leedle Jr, president and CEO of Healthways, said: “We are combining the most advanced over-the-counter therapies for quitting smoking and controlling weight with telephonic and online coaching, a strong virtual community and additional support tools to help people eat better, exercise more and take better care of themselves. This kind of comprehensive approach is the best way to improve health, it is the future, and we’re pleased to be able to partner with GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare to bring it to the market.”
