Pfizer Hopes On Indian Pharma Company

Does not rule out Indian acquisition

David Simmons president and general manager said that Pfizer is banking on its alliance with Aurobindo Pharma to turn around its generic medicines unit and drive overall growth, reported Livemint.

Pfizer is also considering other option to acquire in the subcontinent. “Where an acquisition looks very attractive financially, we would certainly consider it,” he added.

Earlier in May, Pfizer acquired rights to 55 tablets and five injectable drugs from Aurobindo Pharma.

“We can partner with companies like Aurobindo and in-license their products. We can make them (products) at our own manufacturing plants, where we have a unique capability. Or, we can acquire a company with the assets,” he said.

Pfizer expects that the alliance with Aurobindo, will help boost it’s established drugs unit. “By 2011, we are going to turn it (established drugs unit which he heads) into a growth engine for Pfizer.”
