Ranbaxy Obtains FDA Approval For Acetaminophen Tablets

For the treatment of fever and pain

Ranbaxy Laboratories (Ranbaxy) has obtained FDA approval in the US to market its over-the-counter drug, Acetaminophen tablets. The company said that the tablets will be available in 650mg, reported myiris.com.

Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is basically a pain reliever and a fever reducer. In addition to that, the drug is used to treat many conditions such as headache, muscle aches, arthritis, backache, toothaches, flu and cold.

In combination with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and opioid analgesics, Paracetamol or Acetaminophen is used in the management of more severe pain (such as postoperative pain).

Reportedly, the maximum amount of acetaminophen for adults is 1000mg per dose and 4000mg per day.

The words acetaminophen, used in the US, Canada and Hong Kong, and paracetamol (used elsewhere) both come from chemical names for the compound: para-acetylaminophenol and para-acetylaminophenol.
