Smaller Doses Of Acetaminophen Safe, Says Mayo Clinic

Mayo Clinic, in a study, has found Acetaminophen to be a safe and effective drug for pain. The drug is often recommended instead of aspirin, as an OTC drug.

The result was published in the January issue of Mayo Clinic Women’s HealthSource. It also posts safety concerns and the maximum dose to be taken.

The reported adverse event for the drug, if taken in high dose, are liver damage which can even lead to liver failure.

Acetaminophen is used to treat headaches, cold and flu symptoms, sinus problems, sleeplessness, arthritis and menstrual cramps also. Acetaminophen is also the common API in some prescription pain medications.

The Food and Drug Administration is considering changes that would help reduce the risk of overdoses, which cause 56,000 emergency room visits, 26,000 hospitalizations and 500 deaths each year in the US, quoted newswise.
