GSK workers injured in UK plant blast

Four GlaxoSmithKline employees have been injured in a blast at one of the company's Scottish pharmaceutical plants.

The blast is said to have occurred at the company’s Irvine, North Ayrshire manufacturing site, which produces antibiotics and active pharmaceuticals in bulk. The 100-acre facility is GlaxoSmithKline’s largest UK penicillin-manufacturing site and one of the biggest production plants in Europe.

The impact the explosion will have upon drug supplies is not yet known, but the main area of the plant affected is said to be that responsible for raw materials for two minor drugs, namely Wellbone and Malarone.

Two of the employees suffered burns and two were reported to be suffering from shock. An investigation into the cause of the blast is underway and the plant has reportedly been closed temporarily.
