WHO recommends Ranbaxy’s AIDS drugs

Seven AIDS drugs produced by Ranbaxy Laboratories have been re-included in the World Health Organization's pre-qualification list following test discrepancies last year which resulted in the drugs being removed from the organizations recommendations.

The WHO’s prequalification list is intended to help countries decide which medicines to purchase when considering anti-AIDS campaigns.

Ranbaxy called the move a significant development that would make it easier for developing countries to access affordable generic drugs and scale up treatment rapidly. Approximately half of those taking AIDS drugs in poorer countries are taking generic drugs according to World Health Organization (WHO), most of which are manufactured by Indian companies.

Ranbaxy said its products were all manufactured at state-of-the-art facilities that are inspected and approved by some of the most stringent agencies in the world. The company also said its contract research organizations, which carry out bio-equivalence studies on the drugs, were globally reputed and stringently regulated.
