FDA clears batch of Chiron flu vaccine for sale

Chiron is to begin distributing its flu vaccine after the FDA cleared about 1.5 million doses of Fluvirin for sale. These shipments represent the first doses the company has supplied since it withdrew the vaccine last year.

Chiron was due to supply the American market with up to 50 million doses of its flu vaccine in the last influenza season, however contamination concerns found by regulators in the company’s factory in Liverpool in the UK, forced the company to halt production. As a result Chiron was unable to supply any doses of Fluvirin to the US last year.

A company spokesperson quoted by Reuters said that there are some final tests that the company will have to perform before the vaccine can be sent to distributers, but that the company expects to start shipping the drug “in the coming days”.
