HSRx nears completion of OTC acne treatment trial of HSRx 2121

US-based biopharmaceutical firm HSRx Group is nearing completion of a clinical trial for its over-the-counter (OTC) acne treatment product, HSRx 2121.

The fully randomized placebo-controlled trial, conducted by Moore Clinical Research, an independent FDA-compliant contract research organization (CRO), compares the performance of HSRx’s acne treatment product with that of a other market product and of a placebo.

Around 90 subjects will be included in the six-week trial, which will focus on alleviating facial acne and reducing redness and intensity of breakouts.

HSRx Group executive chairman Robert Gow said: "Acne is a disease that deals a heavy blow to the self-esteem of those affected.

"Acne is among the 10 most prevalent human diseases and recent studies show it has a huge, long-term psychological impact on many of the 80+% of teenagers and young adults affected by this disease."

"Current topical treatments are so harsh that a significant percentage of consumers discontinue their use before desired results are achieved.

"The medical community also knows that overuse of antibiotics generally is creating antibiotic-resistant superbugs, with horrific implications.

"A new, more effective next generation acne treatment is needed and our aim with this clinical trial is to demonstrate that the HSRx acne treatment product meets that need."

The global market for acne products is estimated at $3-4bn, with significant expansion expected from growing middle-class populations in China and India.

The company has developed a portfolio of next generation OTC drug products for many categories of common health conditions.

Each of the company’s products are subjected to independently-conducted clinical trials against a current market-leading product to show their ability to deliver superior treatment outcomes with reduced side effects.

All the company’s OTC drug products use natural ingredients in formulations.
