Battelle receives NIAID biodefense research contract

Battelle has received a single source award from the US Department of Health and Human Services' National Institutes of Health to provide evaluation and testing services for vaccines and other biologics for infectious diseases.

The $102.5m worth contract will help the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Division of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (DMID) to develop medical countermeasures against infectious diseases.

The research will also evaluate the efficacy, immunogenicity, and safety of vaccines and analyze samples from clinical trials as part of the contract that spreads over 10 years .

Battelle’s Health and Life Sciences Global Business president Barbara Kunz, said the contract is exactly the type of work the company is built for.

"It spans several areas of expertise and supports the government clients that we hold in high regard," Kunz added.

The obtained data will contribute to an eventual decision by the Food and Drug Administration about the product’s safety and efficacy.
